It's not easy being green

I have some stuff that I need to get rid of, which adds up to quite a large amount. Now, I could simply leave it outside for the binmen to take, but most of it is recyclable and I want to do my bit for the environment, so I decide that I'll take it to the nearest recycling centre.

This turns out to be ever so slightly difficult. For more moanings go

The recycling centres closest to me are run by Enfield Council and in order to prevent non-Enfield residents having access to the centres, the Council has decided that in order to gain access residents must show an entry permit. Now, as an Enfield resident and Enfield council tax payer I don't have a problem with this, as I don't want to have to pay to recycle the rubbish of people who don't contribute to the upkeep of the centres.

Trouble is, the Council have neglected to send me an entry permit.

No problem, I think. I'll just get them to send me one. Two phone requests and an email later there is still no sign of my entry permit. So, I ring the Council up once more and ask where I have to go to to collect a permit, as I really, really need one.

The woman I speak to tells me to go to a road off the A10. That should be okay, I think, should only take me 15 minutes or so to get to. How wrong can you be?

There are road works - major road works - on the A10. It takes me an agonising 50 minutes to reach the place I'd been directed to. Only, instead of the Council offices I'd expected I'm actually at the recycling centre itself. Oh, and it's closed. It is, I gather, closed on Mondays.

Sigh.

The journey back is equally tortuous. The roadworks on the A10 wouldn't affect me southbound, but I know that once I hit the North Circ I will be in a major traffic jam, as there's been an accident that has caused major tailbacks, and according to the traffic reports on the radio the traffic jam hasn't cleared yet. So, I decide to cut across towards Southgate and come down the surburban streets. So does everybody else.

All I can say is that was two hours of my life that I won't get back again. And I still haven't got my entry permit. I guess I'll have to ring the Council up again tomorrow...
