Feeling the Angel love
6 May 2004 09:54I have finally succumbed and ordered Seasons One, Two and Three on DVD. I'll be able to get rid of my tapes, which is great from a clutter POV.
But, how insane is this? Purchasing all three seasons from amazon.com is about the same price as buying one season from sendit-com/blackstar, and about £10.00 more than one season from amazon.co.uk. Excluding postage. I'm getting all three seasons for £75, including postage, from amazon.com. Bargain!
It was even cheaper getting them today from amazon.com than amazon.ca (my usual cheap purchasing place). But I was walking with
thermidor (who is, alas, on her way back home now to the US) and
temaris through Leicester Square last night and saw what the US dollar exchange rate against sterling is atm (no wonder thermidor was wincing), so thought that amazon.com might be cheaper. And it was.
Even taking into account currency fluctuations, though, the DVDs in the UK are far too expensive compared to North America and are yet another shining example of how we get ripped off in this country. But really, don't those people who sell goods over the internet realise that many of us are savvy enough to shop around worldwide for the cheapest price? And have multi-region DVD players, which are widely available in the UK?

Agreed, but..
Date: 6 May 2004 04:57 (UTC)...you may wanna watch ordering from amazon.com as often customs catch their parcels and charge you extra tax before they deliver them. Mind you, even then it can still be cheaper then buying here. I order from websites all the time and on the whole you can get much cheaper prices abroad, you just have to make sure customs don't catch you.
May I recommend the following stores in particular:
http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/ - doesn't get caught by customs
http://www6.cd-wow.com/ - cheapest for region 2 dvds anywhere, other regions do get caught by customs now sadly but still cheap!
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ - good for anime
Hope that helps :)

If you're buying Buffy DVD sets, wait until May 24th and order from Amazon.co.uk, they're selling the sets at the new discounted price of £29.97 with free delivery.

Date: 6 May 2004 05:39 (UTC)Re Customs, so far I've been lucky in that I've ordered large amounts of stuff from both amazon.com and amazon.ca and not been knobbled. However I know plenty of people who have been. There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern to it, except that if they've got you once they may be on the look out for parcels to your address in the future.
I am at risk re Angel, because it'll be quite a large parcel arriving at the same time. But even adding on the VAT the DVDs are far cheaper than in the UK so I figure that even if I end up paying VAT I'll still save a lot of money compared to buying them in the UK.

Thanks for the news re Buffy. That's well worth knowing.
