I had a wonderful time in New York (and New Jersey). I met some great people whose company I enjoyed hugely. As for NYC itself, wow! What a transformation. All that make this city one of the greatest in the world is still there and it sparkles! But that faint edge of menace that the city used is exude is gone. Previously I wouldn't dared to wander around even parts of Manhattan on my own but now I felt completely safe wherever I walked.

Congratulations to the people of NYC for making your city such a pleasure to visit.

I plan to post more detailed reports later about what I saw and who I met but have come back to find all hell has broken loose at work. Actually, it's more fair to say that all hell broke loose at 5.00pm on Friday afternoon when the prosecution dumped a huge load of documents on us which need to be read and considered in time for a response to be drafted and sent to the court by Wednesday 23 June 2004. Trouble is, I'm in court Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday...

I had a wedding celebration to go to yesterday in a small village near Grantham. I had planned to stay overnight. Instead I found myself driving for a couple of hours to the party, drinking absolutely no alcohol and driving a couple of hours back to London again late last night. All so I could work today. Sigh.

Am taking a few minutes break to whinge. Oh, and to ask if anyone's got experience of loading digital photos into their LJ and, if so, should they be cropped to avoid taking up too much bandwidth? And, um, how do I do that? Camera is new (very new, bought just before I went to NYC) so I'm clueless about these things.

I vaguely recall LJ working on a new feature that'll allow you to save pics on their servers (or something; i wasn't paying attention), but far as I know, for now you'll have to upload them to your own web space and then img link them from there.

Do you know how to download pics from your camera to your computer? My camera (Sony megapixel thingy) has a programme that you install, then, when you plug your camera into the USB port, the images download automatically. After that, it's a case of cropping the image with a photo editing programme, as they're enormous (about 90cm) when opened in Photoshop or whatever picture editing software you use. So yes, they do need cropping, in my experience.

And resizing might be a good idea if they're very large. Your camera probably came with a photo-editor for your computer, though really, any similar programme will do.

(i have no idea *how* clueless you are, so pardon if i sound like you're eight years old *g*)

Oh yes, that I've done. Looking at the programme I can easily (hopefully) resize (was just too lazy/rushed to check it out), but I wasn't sure if I needed to. So, many thanks for the tip.

*Laughs* I am pretty clueless, and, really, going back to basics is always best. Never underestimate stupidity! My camera does have a photo-editor, I was just too lazy (a kind person might say 'rushed') to check it out unless I knew I'd have to, because the pictures are too large to load onto LJ as is.

Really glad the NYC trip went well, sorry you had a truncated wedding experience, and sorry about the lousy evil prosecution guy ruining your weekend.

Belated thank you for the comments. And, yeah, bad, evil prosecution. Ruining my week like that. I'm sure they did it deliberately to get me, and me alone, and none of the other 13 firms of solicitors involved... ;)

Many thanks for the tip, I'll try to remember that for future reference. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to put up the NYC pictures because of problems with my webspace. But I hope to sort those problems out...one day.

Although, is 400 x 400 really a good size? *fixes speedo with a suspicious look*.

Oh, yes, I haven't forgotten the book recs community, BTW, just haven't got round to setting it up yet.

I've lots of space at slashcity, if you're interested.

Um? *g*

I didn't mean to saddle you with the whole thing. I have a couple of ideas, if you want to toss them around via email.

That's exceptionally kind of you and yes, please, that would be *great*!

And, you're a bad, bad man. *g*

Please do LMK what your ideas are re the book recs thing and maybe we can thrash something out in the next few days. I'm at a ball tomorrow night so may not be able to get back to you tomorrow especially as I'm at court during the day. But I'd love to hear what you've come up with.

You can email any pics you want uploaded and I'll give you the addy.

What I was thinking about re books recs was a way of classifying the novels, so it wouldn't only be a question of "I loved this." Maybe we could come up with a list of possible categories (sword & sorcery vs. cyberpunk is an obvious one, but I'd be interested in fine-tuning that, adding whether it has slash content, if the main characters are male/female/human/alien/animal, etc.) Does this make any sense?
