Look at this way - if it goes out before it gets completely ruined you'll still be able to enjoy the fanfic. **Whispers** Voyager. Didn't the awful reality just kill any desire to even enter the Voy world again? I have to say without Cordy - even with addition of the lovely Spike - Angel is already pretty dead for me.
I didn't see the second to last episode of VOY. I'd abandoned the series by then. I had hope for the first four seasons that VOY would finally live up to the promise it showed in 'Caretaker' the pilot episode, that set up all those delicious possibilities for Starfleet and Maquis conflict, with interesting, likeable characters. By the end of season 4/beginning season 5 I finally gave up hope.
There were some good episodes, but for every good one there were at least 4 bad ones.
Hey, I still like Voyager! Yeah, the eps went down in quality ... dramatically ... but I love the characters in theory. So much potential. And I'm working on this HUUUUUGE epic C/P because I still wuv my boyz. ;)
And here I am, newbie in LJ-land, floating around and I see there's this unfinished C/P ... and I debate, read it and whimper when it ends without ending? Or torment myself with the knowledge that there's a story out there I haven't read?
I'm a masochist. Started reading. Enjoying it muchly when all of a sudden it turned steamy in the holodeck and I had to stop 'coz, hey, I'm at work and I could get in trouble for that. But it's something to look forward to for tonight when I'm watching/not-watching Stargate.
Seiously, I wish I'd been able to keep the love going for the characters like you have. I suppose the trouble for me was that they grew in ways that didn't particularly appeal to me. For example, as you know I was a huge P/T fan and still adore Bloodfever but the P/T relationship as portrayed on screen for the most part for me didn't live up to all that passionate promise I saw in Bloodfever. As for Chak and Tom, well they were so rarely together onscreen that I can't say that they actually had a relationship.
I think it was because I fell in love with the series so much that the resulting disappointment was the worse for me, a bit like that new boyfriend who is shiny and new and wonderful and then turns out to be really boring underneath. Nowadays I'm more wary in my attachments, although Highlander never disappointed in the way that Voyager did. Hilghlander had the occasional dud episode but mostly it was good drama, with consistent character interaction and growth.
As for the WIP... on your head be it! *g* I'm glad that you've enjoyed what you've read so far and I can tell you how it would have ended if you manage to get through the whole thing (and please don't feel that you have to force yourself) you still want to know.

Ummm ... yes! I don't know why you think you have to be ashamed of this. I thought it was fantastic. I adored the "idea" part where they were down on the planet, Tom in command, everything so grim.
I have several very old WIPs just like this. Great ideas, well-executed, but they petered out halfway through and there's too much to get through to just end them without writing another 100 pages. It sucks.
Anyway, I loved this. And I definitely want to know how you were going to end it. :)
Many thanks for the nice words. I don't think that it totally sucks, but I think that I see the faults rather than the virtues. But I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the "idea" part, as that's my favourite part.

It does. But if you haven't lost your enthusiasm there's always the possibility that you'll go back and finish them sometime. I have a HL WIP that I fully intend to finish at some time even though I started it 2 or 3 years ago. But then I haven't fallen out of love with HL.
As for the ending... Well, just before the "idea" part we'd had Bloodfever in which B'Elanna came on to Tom. She didn't know that Tom and Chak were lovers, so Tom told her. Tom was prepared to 'help' her if her life depended on it, of course, but wanted to be faithful to Chak if possible. Also, he was very tempted by B'Elanna who he is very attracted to and thinks that he could have loved in another universe. But he resists temptation, B'Elanna fights Vorik and Tom and B'Elanna are on their way to becoming fast friends. Chakotay and B'Elanna are good friends already, of course.
Then comes Unity, and Chakotay has a fling with Borg woman. Now, it's impossible for him to resist her but Tom is pretty pissed off about it all and breaks off the relationship with Chakotay. There are then lots of scenes about the subsequent tension between them and the crew's reaction to this. The crew doesn't know about the relationship because they've deliberately kept it under wraps because they're worried about the crew's reaction. The only people who know are Harry (he finds out when he walks in on Tom and Chak having sex in the episode where he had the affair with the alien that nearly killed him) and B'Elanna. However the crew realises that something is wrong.
One night Tom and Chak both end up in the mess hall together. They think that they're alone, but in fact there are a couple of crewmembers in there having some nookie *g* who dive for cover when they realise that someone's coming.
Tom and Chak argue about their relationship, but end up deciding to give it another try, although Tom warns Chakotay that if he's unfaithful again that's it. Of course, the crewmembers tell everyone else, so the secret is out. Chak and Tom are very apprehensive about the crew's reaction - breach of regs, whether Tom is accepted etc - but the crew are fine with it all and are supportive.
Everything in the garden is rosy, but then it turns out that Janeway and Tuvok aren't dead after all and are on their way back to Voyager. Naturally, they will resume their previous positions.
When they arrive back on board Janeway tells Chakotay that she wants a relationship with him, has decided that carpe diem rules after nearly dying and being stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Now, Chakotay had very definitely been in love with Janeway and the only reason they weren't lovers was because of Janeway's insistence on the regs. So Tom is devastated. He's sure that Chakotay will dump him for Janeway. Chakotay loves her, after all, and although he and Chakotay have become friends as well as lovers Chakotay isn't in love with him.
Trouble is, he's in love with Chakotay. But he idealises Janeway, who is the person who gave him his life back and he loves her for that. He's not in love with her but would die for her and will not stand in her way and make a fuss about her and Chakotay getting together.
The story ends while Tom is clearing his things out of the first officer's quarters preparatory to moving back to his old quarters so that Chakotay can have the first officer's quarters. Chakotay walks in on Tom and suggests that Tom needn't move out and that they can share the quarters. If Tom wants to of course.
Tom is really taken aback. He stammers something about Janeway and Chakotay says that she's his friend and his Captain, but Tom is his lover. At this point Tom realises that Chakotay is choosing him because he loves him. Ahhhhhh! *g*

What a squandered opportunity. Sigh.
Bring back Firefly I say!
