There's a report in today's Independent concerning an attempt to open a 'Creationist' school in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. The local state school was failing and a businessman who had set up 3 others of these schools offered to set up another to replace the failing school.

The parents and teachers protested. They would rather have a failing school than one which 'indoctrinates' the children into what they, presumably, regard as a crackpot theory. The Independent report is here

Sums up the British position on extreme Christianity rather nicely, I think.

Thanks for the link. I was just discussing the typical British attitude to religion, and how that fits into the context of the HP books, with an American friend the other day, and this illustrates it very well.

You're very welcome. I think it may be difficult for countries where religion is an integral part of daily life to understand the British attitude, which is pretty much weddings, Christenings and funerals only so far as church attendance is concerned. That's assuming that people are CofE, or some other Protestant sect, mind you. Other Christian sects and other faiths tend to be more devout.

But most people are Protestant and religion therefore plays little part in our day to day existence. You obviously know this, but then Aussies are pretty well up on British culture, I think.

Exactly! It's a good example of people power. Also common-sense. *g*

we ain't fond of mixing religion with pretty much anything. As was said of some other social issue* once: I don't care as long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses *g*.

Plus, we have a proprietary interst in Darwinism. Yay, rational Brits! *G*.

(*yes, it was homosexuality).

I always smile whenever I see that quote. Sums it up nicely. Not that there are many horses in the streets nowadays...

Darwinism rules!

Ah, just like our local Conservatives: full of the Peniel Pentecostal Church, but even Martin Bell standing as an Independent couldn't help us...

Yikes! Most Conservatives I know are cheerfully irreligious. It's rather disturbing to contemplate religious Tories.
