That's Perth, Western Australia, not Perth in Scotland, BTW.

Turns out there's been a bit of a faux pas, in that some 'outside contractor' sent round an email warning that it's dangerous to travel to Perth. That's *Perth*, WA. You know, friendly place (so I'm told my Aussie mates of mine - I haven't yet made it to Perth WA myself), bit remote, maybe, but generally nicely laid back and easy going. That's what my friends from Perth say, anyway.

Anyway, the Western Australia tourist board is absolutely hopping mad, referring to Perth (I suspect rightly) as being one of the safest cities in the world.

But the bit that really made me giggle was the report (on the BBC site here) that the City of Perth Council was 'less concerned', stating that, "The weather is a bit dodgy." Oh, that's just lovely. Rock on Perth.

My understanding was that Perth was not only one of the safest cities, but also one of the dullest cities! I was told once by an Aussie that Perth's atmosphere was not dissimilar to that of Tunbridge Wells. (Or is it Tumbridge Wells? I can never remember) Mind you, he hailed from the bright lights of Sydney, so maybe he was predisposed to find small and medium sized cities boring.

I have to say, somebody at the City of Perth Council has a lovely sense of humour.

Perth: far from anywhere that's fun. Beautiful place to live but very isolated from other cities. People from Perth tend to go on holidays to Bali because it's closer than the rest of Autralia.

Yes, my friends from Perth tell me that it's the most isolated city in the world. And, presumably (according to the 'independent contractor') one of the most dangerous... Or, you know, not!

It's Tunbridge Wells, which is extremely dull. I hope for Perth's sake it's a bit more exciting than TW.

And yes, I'm with you on the sense of humour. Love that dry Aussie wit.

Oh yes, I remember Tunbridge Wells very well, despite not being able to spell it, and if Perth is anything like it I will never visit there! ;) My paternal grandparents lived for many years in a self-consciously picturesque village approximately midway between Maidstone and TW, and when I was younger I had many exciting excursions to TW for tea. Eventually my grandmother decamped to the bright lights, big city atmosphere of Bexhill-on-Sea, and I no longer have relatives in Kent. I think I could bear never to return to TW!
