Eeek!

So last time there was bad weather in Yorkshire I phoned my parents, worried that they'd been affected. And they were fine - their house is on a village green near the top of a hill.

Today, even near the top of a hill though they are, the cellar is flooded. My father used to have a wine collection down there worth well into five figures. Lucky he sold it, although the cognac needed rescuing! I pointed out to my mother that they must be insured for any damage - they've been trying to bail the cellar out all day but without success.

Eldest nephew's school is also flooded, much to his glee. Kids! Still, he could help his grandfather bail the cellar out...*g*

But it's bad, really bad in and near Sheffield. I grew up near there and I've never seen anything like it and for my parents house to flood, even with their top-of-the-hill location is scary.

I don't think we've ever seen anything like this in Sheffield.

Sobering thought re global warming.

There was a letter in one of the freebie papers today saying something to the effect of:

"the good thing about this weather is it stops the whinging of the 'global warming' brigade"

Someone rather missing the point there I think.

Glad your parents (and their cognac) are ok.

RE: Global warming - this following comment neither backs it up nor dismisses it, but my Dad said it was all the rain we should have had in the last 20 years.

Wettest June on record for Sheffield, I heard. Has that Rotherham dam burst yet? ::goes to check BBC.co.uk::

*g* Nah, the dam never burst. Thankfully, because my parents were in line for flash flooding if it did...

Belated response. Thanks, and it looks as if the worst is over in the area, which is all to the good.

that sounds horridly unpleasant. i hope they & the house are ok in the end!

They're fine, but lots of places in the area are still flooded, a week later. I feel very sorry for them. The water is finally receding, but everything is absolutely ruined.

Oh that's bad! I'm glad your parents are OK though. Maybe your nephew is just gleeful about the days off school rather than the flooding and damage? I can't fault him for that, if it's the case! We get sent home here when typhoons are on their way and I can't help being a gleeful adult at those times *gg*

And yes, to the global warming *nods worriedly*. The weather patterns are only going to get whackier as a result, I fear.

Oh yes. We've had massive hailstorms today in London. In July! It's not completely unheard of, but the weather is definitely screwy in a big way.

I've just seen the news reports via google, and it does look quite frightening. I'm glad your family has not fared worse.

Thanks for that. My family's been pretty luck, really. Especially compared with the people who live just a few miles away who are still flooded a week later.

We've moved all the furniture upstairs. Our garden is gone, our street a lake, my care dead and waterlogged. It's an utter nightmare, but our cognac is safe.

How are things now where you are?

Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about your folks although, and I know it's small comfort, relatively speaking, they seem to have escaped relatively lightly given their location. As you say though, hopefully the insurance will cover their losses and any tidying-up though I know to my cost that water is incredibly destructive.

On a lighter note, it was lovely to see you on Saturday - I have been flying so far below the radar these last few months and more as to be practically subterranean and I have missed keeping in touch with people. That said I check everyone's journal periodically and I had noted your postings in regard to legal aid but, my God, I was absolutely blown away by what you said on Saturday and the implications for you, personally. I am sure that somone of your obvious talents and experience won't have much difficulty putting them to use and getting paid for the privilege but I so regret the necessity and, more than ever, am determined to toe the legal line, just in case.

Hoping that there will be an upswing in your affairs soon (God knows we could all use one).

J.

It was lovely to see you too! And I wish it was the case that the good lawyers were rewarded properly, but sadly these 'reforms' actually reward only the sloppy, the slapdash, the careless. Those who don't care about doing a good job are the only ones who will survive.

The rest of us... I don't know. I really don't know. I have no idea where to go from here.

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eek indeed! I assume my Parents gave my number to the usual suspects before disappearing abroad, and the fact that no one's phoned me means that neither their house nor Nana's old cottage has been hit.

And the rest of my family are all okay too as far as I can make out. May that continue for them and all of yours as well.

I presume everything's fine in the Peak District.

I really miss it, you know. South Yorkshire just isn't the same - nowhere near as nice.

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2007-07-04 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I miss it too. I should make an effort to get up there soon.
