Apparently it happened whilst he was on holiday in Peru.

It is definitely the end of an era. I shall miss hearing him on the radio and mourn that I'll never again attend a gig of his. What an amazing achievement to break new and cutting edge music for over 40 years.

Way to go, John. You will be much missed.

I'm gutted too. Every time I read another comment about his death I start to tear up. I can't remember the last time I was this upset about the death of a public figure.

He will be sorely missed. There was really no one else like him.

There wasn't. I think there'll be a lot of very sad people in Britain tonight.

I've been surprised at how upset I am, and how moved by the tributes I've been hearing on the radio all afternoon.

But then I realise I've been listening to that wonderful laconic voice on and off for over 30 years, from 'Top Gear' to 'Grumpy Old Men'! What I really admired about him was that he always seemed to be very much his own man. His passion was music -- he was not driven by the desire for fame or fortune, or swayed by fads and fashion -- and how many 'celebrities' can you say that about nowadays?

He was unique and will be greatly missed.

Me too, on being very upset.

I still remember the thrill a group of schoolfriends and I had when our request was played on his Sunday afternoon request show. I think I was 14 at the time. And then attending some of his gigs when I was at university. Of course, I always listened to his programme. But then, who didn't?

I've loved his 'Home Truths' programme on Radio 4 in recent years, as well. I can't believe he's gone. I think most of us can't believe it. He showed that one can be, and remain, a thoroughly decent human being even when famous.

Oh damn, I'm tearing up again.

I just read my mate's MSN name with much the same message, but shorter. What a blow to the world.
