Apparently it happened whilst he was on holiday in Peru.

It is definitely the end of an era. I shall miss hearing him on the radio and mourn that I'll never again attend a gig of his. What an amazing achievement to break new and cutting edge music for over 40 years.

Way to go, John. You will be much missed.

Me too, on being very upset.

I still remember the thrill a group of schoolfriends and I had when our request was played on his Sunday afternoon request show. I think I was 14 at the time. And then attending some of his gigs when I was at university. Of course, I always listened to his programme. But then, who didn't?

I've loved his 'Home Truths' programme on Radio 4 in recent years, as well. I can't believe he's gone. I think most of us can't believe it. He showed that one can be, and remain, a thoroughly decent human being even when famous.

Oh damn, I'm tearing up again.
